trayside handbook of marbling

an interactive working guide for the serious beginner

This completely revised and expanded

2016 edition of The Trayside Handbook

of Marbling features:

  1. a  revised and expanded History of Marbling, with images from Diderot's Encyclopedia.

  2. a section  detailing all the Equipment you need, supplemented  by a page of instructions for building a sturdy wood tray, rakes, combs, and whisks.

  3. a greatly expanded Preparation of Materials section, with instructions for readying all marbling supplies, even some less common variants. Guidance is also provided for marbling on fabric, as well as on using paints other than watercolor.

  4. a Bibliography including online sources and a section about marbling on fabric, with a fully     annotated Marbling Resources and Supplies section that directs you to finding everything for marbling, even roll-hemmed silk scarves.

  5. An all-new Glossary replete with helpful

    explanations and perhaps more information

than you probably ever wanted to know on

the less than obvious terms, terminology

    and chemical processes that magically

    produce marbled art.

...and that’s just the Supporting Cast!!

The section on Patterns--Traditional Marbled Patterns and Modern Variations--is greatly expanded and is now INTER-ACTIVE!

This means that, in addition to the tip-ins of real marbled paper from my personal work that introduce each of the four sections on patterns, you’ll find an “empty tray” next to the detailed  instructions for deriving each pattern.  Once you’ve marbled, dried and pressed your own papers, you’ll be able to tip patterns of your own making into each

tray.  In this organized, methodical way you will be building an invaluable reference work, even as you gain skill and understanding.

And with the scraps, you'll be ready to take on the Project provided---a Simple Accordion Book with marbled covers--and much, much more.

Perhaps best of all---

The Handbook concludes with a full Troubleshooting Guide, listing Problems, Causes and Solutions in a fold-out graph format that is easy to use.  To make this large section handier to use trayside, I've also provided a 8-1/2" x 11" copy of the Troubleshooting Guide encased in plastic that you can tack up by your tray to provide solutions to problems as you work--as you encounter them.

Highly suggested in addition--though not provided because of size--would be a 12"x18" sheet of mylar to lay over the open book as a precaution against spills as you follow the instructions in making patterns.

Finally, the Handbook is spiral bound so that it can lay completely flat or be propped on a book rest right next to where you are working.

In sum, this is not the usual coffee-table book of marbling---it is meant for the serious beginning, intermediate or even experienced marbler who wants to learn, expand or perfect technique and repertoire in Turkish Watercolor Marbling.  It  will not only provide many hours of marbling in an organized (and therefore more fun and rewarding) way, it will leave you a skilled marbler by book's end.  But this is still just a beginning.  I'm beginning work on what I hope will be a book covering some important variant techniques only referenced in this work, such as marbling with other types of paint and Turkish fantasy marbling known as ebru.  Open any door and you will find that several windows open onto new vistas--there is always so much more to learn.
